SWA Cable

As with most electrical applications, SWA Cable is a great choice for supplying power to garages. There are a few things to think about when installing cable including the following;

  • The power you’re pulling through the cable in kW or Amps (check specs for all applications in garage)
  • The length of the run from the mains to the garage
  • Whether the applications you’re powering are single phase or three phase

Once you have all of this information, please refer to our SWA Cable Calculator, where you can input this information. This will result in an estimate cable size (remember to double check with your electrician prior to install).

For example, for a single phase circuit which has a total power draw of 32A and the run is 20m, 6mm 3 Core Armoured Cable would be the size you’d be recommended to use. Again, we urge customers to check with an electrician or industry professional for further clarification as these sizes are estimates.

This cable can be buried directly into the ground with no need for ducting. However it can also be used inside ducting.

How to connect armoured cable to a consumer unit ?

This is a question we are quite often asked, the best way is to terminate your Armoured cable into a metal consumer unit, Using SWA cable glands. This will keep the cable nice and secure and give a professional finish to your installation.

We also stock and supply Populated Garage Consumer Units. These include a 32A and a 6A pre-installed MCB (mini circuit breakers) which are perfect for a variety of standard Garage circuits.
