Most if not all downlights are compatible as it is the Halogen or LED lamp itself that needs to be dimmable rather than the light fitting. This means that as long as you have a compatible dimmable lamp and dimmer switch, you’re good to go!
For dimmable halogen lamps, regular dimmer switches will be compatible. For example, these dimmer switches will be compatible with any lamps rated from 30W all the way to 300W. However, with LED Lamps, something called a ‘Trailing Edge’ Dimmer Switch is required. As LED lamps are generally a much lower wattage than equivalent Halogen lamps, they need a dimmer switch with lower wattage requirements. This is also why regular dimmer switches don’t work with LED Lamps.
